Molecular Genetics of Bacteria fulfills the need for a comprehensive, primary textbook in bacterial molecular genetics. It is ideally suited as a textbook for advanced undergraduate level courses and as background reading for graduate level courses. It is also recommended reading for scientists in all fields of biology, many of which depend upon the concepts and techniques covered in this book.

While the book concentrates of necessity on the bacterium Escherichia coli, about which most is known, it also uses examples from other bacteria as appropriate. The material in each chapter has been substantially updated to reflect exciting developments in the field of bacterial molecular genetics and its relationship to other fields, including eukaryotic cell biology and development. Recent years have been a period of consolidation" in biology with many seemingly diverse areas being discovered to be different manifestations of the same phenomenon, and these relationships have been emphasized. It has also been a period of major technical advances, including genomics and microarrays, which are also covered in the book.

The second edition retains the same organization and style as the first edition, and the order of presentation of the topics has been largely unchanged as this order was popular with most instructors using the textbook. As before, each chapter contains a chapter summary, a set of discussion questions to encourage speculation, problems (with answers), and suggested readings, all of which are updated to reflect advances in the field. It also retains the use of "boxes" to present related material of interest to each topic without breaking the continuity of the text.

The secondedition will continue to serve as an important text for all courses in bacterial molecular genetics and as background for courses in molecular biology and biotechnology.

Media Power in Central America by Rick J. Rockwell, ISBN 0252028023

Media Power in Central America is the first book in a generation to explore the media landscape in Central America. It captures the political and cultural interplay between the media and those in power in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, and Nicaragua. Highlighting the subtle strangulation of opposition media voices in the region, the authors show how the years since the guerrilla wars have not yielded the free media systems that some had expected. Country by country, the authors deal with the specific conditions of government-sponsored media repression, economic censorship, corruption, and consumer trends that shape the political landscape. Challenging the notion of the media as a democratizing force, Media Power in Central America shows how the media are used to block democratic reforms in the region and outlines the difficulties of playing watchdog to rulers who use the media as a tool of power. Taming Hal: Designing Interfaces Beyond 2001

Machines dominate our lives, from alarm clocks that wake us up in the morning to radios that lull us to sleep. Most of our interactions with automated machines and computers are problem-free, but more often than we would like, they can be irritating and confusing. This is frequently harmless, such as a VCR recording the wrong show, but when it involves a critical system like an autopilot or medical device it can be a matter of life or death. "Taming HAL seeks to explain these miscommunications between humans and machines by exploring user interfaces of everyday devices. Degani examines thirty different systems for human use, including watches, consumer electronic products, Internet applications, cars, medical equipment, navigation systems onboard cruise ships, and autopilots of commercial aircraft. Readers will discover why interfaces between people and machines all too often do not work and what needs to be done to avoid potential tragedies. Taming Hal: Designing Interfaces Beyond 2001
